Second-Storey Pressure-Treated Deck Project in Mississauga

When homeowners reach out with approved drawings and a building permit already in place, it allows us to focus on what we do best—executing a safe, well-built deck that meets code and performs long-term. For this project, the homeowners contacted an experienced deck builder in Mississauga to replace an aging second-storey deck with a new pressure-treated structure designed for durability, safety, and everyday use. The home is located in Mississauga, where elevated decks require careful planning and strict adherence to local building regulations.

The scope of work included removing the existing deck, installing new concrete footings, building a second-storey pressure-treated deck with code-compliant railings, adding a side deck, and constructing a staircase leading down to the backyard.

Removal of the Existing Deck

The project began with the complete removal of the old deck structure. The existing framing and supports no longer met current building standards, so the deck was dismantled entirely to allow for a proper rebuild from the ground up. Removing the old structure also provided clear access for excavation and ensured the new deck could be built exactly according to the approved drawings and permit requirements.

New Footings and First Inspection

Because this was a second-storey deck, proper structural support was critical. We excavated new footing holes and installed 16-inch Sonotube footings, extending approximately 5 feet below grade to reach stable soil and comply with local building code requirements applicable to residential projects in Mississauga.

Once the Sonotubes were installed and reinforced as specified in the drawings, concrete was poured to create a solid foundation for the new deck posts. After the concrete had cured, we scheduled the first building inspection, which was performed by an inspector from the City of Mississauga Building Department. The inspection confirmed proper footing depth, placement, and overall compliance before framing began.

Deck Substructure and Second Inspection

With the footings approved, we moved forward with building the deck substructure, including posts, beams, and joists. Extra attention was given to load paths, fastening methods, and structural connections, which are especially important for elevated decks.

After completing the framing, a second inspection was scheduled and carried out by the City of Mississauga Building Department. This inspection focused on the structural framing, connections, and overall integrity of the deck. Once the framing passed inspection, we were cleared to proceed with decking, railings, and stairs.

Railings, Side Deck, and Staircase

The homeowners chose pressure-treated railings with aluminum balusters, combining durability with a clean, modern appearance. Because the deck surface is more than 5 feet above grade, building code required the railings to be a minimum height of 42 inches, ensuring safety while maintaining an open feel.

In addition to the main second-storey deck, we also completed a side deck and constructed a full staircase leading down to the backyard. The stairs were carefully laid out to provide consistent rise and run, comfortable walking height, and proper handrail placement for safe everyday use.

Finished Pressure-Treated Deck

The completed deck provides a strong, functional outdoor living space designed to handle daily use and Ontario’s changing seasons. Pressure-treated lumber was selected for its structural reliability, long-term performance, and suitability for elevated decks where strength and durability are essential.

By following the approved drawings, coordinating inspections at the proper stages, and building the structure correctly from below grade upward, the project was completed to code and to a high standard of craftsmanship.

Happy Clients and a Glowing Review

The homeowners were extremely happy with both the final result and our overall service on their Mississauga deck project. They appreciated the clear communication throughout the build, attention to detail, and the care taken to ensure the deck passed each inspection smoothly. After completion, they shared a glowing review, highlighting their satisfaction with the craftsmanship, professionalism, and the finished deck.

Built the Right Way from the Ground Up

This project is a great example of why proper planning, inspections, and solid construction matter—especially for second-storey decks. While the finished deck is what homeowners see and enjoy, the real value lies in the work done below grade and within the structure itself. From deep footings and inspected framing to code-compliant railings and stairs, every step was completed with long-term safety and durability in mind.
